Like many of you, my involvement in Granada started with a vacation. In 2006, our family travelled to Nicaragua to explore, and we impulsively made an offer on a home. Our lives evolved to trips back and forth between our Northern base in Seattle and our house in the historic central district. I was introduced to the work of Puedo Leer early on by founders Carol and Helen, and it has been exciting to see the program grow as it spreads the love of reading throughout the region.

I spent my childhood with my nose in a book and later studied Comparative Literature (German, French and English! I didn’t learn Spanish until we came to Granada for a year in 2009.) Along with raising two sons in Seattle, I worked on program and fund development with local nonprofits. With my boys grown up and out of the house, my work as a freelance grant writer now allows me to travel with my husband, Jonathan, and spend as much time as we can in Granada. Together we founded Avancemos, a Seattle nonprofit that partners with community-based organizations to support youth programs in Central America.

My parents, Max and Judith Bailey, share our love of Granada and have visited us there often. As former educators, they were impressed with Puedo Leer’s programs to educate teachers as well as improve literacy among Granada’s children. They have been enthusiastic supporters for many years.

I was thrilled to be invited to join the board a few months ago. It’s great to be part of the organization whose work I have admired for so long.
